We have been learning about life cycles in Science, ready for the arrival of Spring. We have been hatching chicks! It took 21 days for them to hatch and we have to keep the temperature and humidity just right. When they first hatch out they are wet and sticky and have to stay in the incubator for a day to dry out and grow strong. Then they are yellow and fluffy and can go under the heat lamp. We have to give them fresh water and chick crumbs every day so that they grow up healthy and strong. We are hoping to keep some hens in our allotment and use the eggs we collect for our cooking. We know that looking after animals is a special responsibility as we have to make sure that they are watered, fed, happy and safe. Soon the frogs will return to our pond and we will study their life cycle too! Keep a look out for the photos!

This term Key Stage 2 Art Club have been super creative despite losing sessions due to the incredibly snowy weather! We did some observational drawing early in term and explored the effect of using different drawing mediums. Then we worked hard making some truly beautiful ceramic picture frames for Mothers’ Day. We put pictures of ourselves in our pictures frames because we knew that our mums would love to see our smiling faces.

Mr Petty has a subject specialism in Art and Design and works to promote and develop Art and Design teaching in regional and national contexts. This year he has been organising and running Durham County’s Art and Design network meetings for primary teachers. In February the network meeting was held at our school. The teachers that attended developed their knowledge, understanding and skills regarding the use of clay in the primary classroom under Mr Petty’s guidance.

Today we had some very special visitors in our whole school assembly. Claire and her dog Gideon visited us from Greyhound Trust Darlington to tell us about why Greyhounds make such great pets. The Greyhound Trust Darlington is the charity that the Ruby and Sapphire house groups will be raising money for this term. We hope that we can raise a lot of money for these lovely hounds!

On Wednesday 14th March the whole school took part in a skipping workshop. Throughout the school day, each class had the opportunity to work with a skipping coach and learn new skipping tricks. The children learned how to use French skipping ropes and speed ropes. At the end of the school day, the children showed each other the new tricks they have learnt in a whole school assembly. Everybody enjoyed improving their skipping skills and being challenged with new tricks to try. Now the whole school are really looking forward to National Skipping Day next Friday. We hope to get the whole school skipping for Sports Relief.

Girls Active
On Tuesday 13th March, Mrs Woods travelled to Newcastle with three girls from Key Stage 2 to take part in a sports program. Chloe, Ruby and Kate had a fantastic day working with many other girls from the North East to develop their leadership skills and learn how to inspire girls to become more active in our school. The girls have devised an action plan to help promote girls’ activity and are already working on creating a PowerPoint for assembly and creating posters for our school.

On Friday 9th March, the tag rugby team played their second tournament this year at Bishop Barrington School. The children played against five other primary schools; drawing one match and winning the rest. Everyone was very excited to win the Level 2 School Games competition. The children are now through to the Level 3 tag rugby competition, which will be held in two weeks’ time at North Durham Academy, Stanley. This is a huge achievement for our school and we are extremely proud of our rugby team!
